PADILLA WANTS SENATE PROBE ON TRILLANES’ ALLEGED DUTERTE WELFARE CHECK

Senator Robin Padilla has moved for a Senate inquiry into reports that former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV was supposedly tasked by the Philippine government to conduct a welfare check on detained former President Rodrigo Duterte in The Hague, Netherlands.

Through Proposed Senate Resolution No. 141, Padilla questioned the legitimacy of designating a private individual like Trillanes for such a role, stressing that the move—if proven true—could pose issues of legality, constitutionality, and propriety.

The resolution sought clarification on whether the alleged designation was formally sanctioned, and under what government authority or mandate it was granted.

“The Senate, in the exercise of its oversight and legislative functions, must look into this matter to ensure transparency, accountability, and to craft possible measures that will provide clearer guidelines on government representation before international bodies,” Padilla said.

In response, Trillanes dismissed the issue and threw the challenge back to Duterte’s family, particularly Vice President Sara Duterte.

“Mas madali kung tanungin na lang nila mismo si Digong kung bumisita nga ako sa kanya o hindi. Anyway, si Sara can talk to him over the phone any time,” Trillanes remarked.

Last week, the Vice President voiced her disapproval of the supposed welfare check reportedly conducted by the Philippine Embassy in The Hague, stressing that their family does not need government intervention and would handle the matter on their own.
