DPWH TO BEGIN REHABILITATION OF CEBU’S EARTHQUAKE-DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE THIS WEEK

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to start the rehabilitation of key infrastructures in Cebu this week, following the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the province.

According to DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, the total damage to roads and bridges has already reached more than ₱2.5 billion.

“Yung rehabilitation, yung permanenteng pagsasaayos, sisimulan this week, itong linggong ito, bukas na bukas,” Dizon said in a radio interview on Sunday, October 5.

He added, “Wala pa diyan yung structures. Yung mga eskuwelahan, yung mga ospital, wala pa ‘yan. So, tataas pa ‘yan.”

Based on the latest report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), around 713 infrastructures in Central Visayas were damaged by the earthquake that hit Bogo City, Cebu last week.

In addition, 18,154 houses were affected across the region—3,507 of which were completely destroyed.

The NDRRMC also reported 73 fatalities and 559 injuries resulting from the quake. A total of 128,464 families, equivalent to 455,631 individuals, were affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile, in a separate interview, Dizon mentioned that the DPWH is also monitoring the repair of schools damaged by a recent typhoon in Masbate, with a target completion within two months.

“Mahigit 1,000 classrooms ‘yong nasira (sa Masbate). Marami doon halos total ‘yong damage. Ang deadline na sine-set natin is hopefully, within two months matapos natin lahat ‘yong mga nasira,” he said.
