Newly appointed Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla assured the public that his leadership will not serve any political faction, emphasizing that his work will be solely for the country and the Filipino people.
In a press conference on Tuesday, October 7, Remulla made it clear that “the law must never be weaponized” and vowed to uphold fairness and impartiality in carrying out his mandate.
“Alam n’yo, noong DOJ secretary ako, ang una kong tinanggal [ay] weaponization ng batas and it could not be weaponized. Sisiguraduhin ko sa lahat ‘yan,” said Remulla.
He further stressed that his office will not favor any side or political interest.
“Wala itong sisinuhin. Ang trabaho ng Ombudsman, para sa Pilipinas. Hindi sa kampo ng isang politika,” he declared.
Remulla’s statement came amid criticisms surrounding his appointment, particularly from Senator Imee Marcos, sister of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., who earlier opposed his nomination as Ombudsman.
During a press conference on September 2, Senator Marcos explained her reasons for rejecting Remulla’s possible appointment, claiming that his camp allegedly sought to target Vice President Sara Duterte and her allies.
“Ipipilit nila na si Boying ang maging ombudsman para mapakulong si VP Inday Sara bago mag-2027,” Marcos said.
The senator also expressed concern that the alleged political motivation could extend to other Duterte allies — and even to herself.
“At hindi lang si Inday Sara, kundi lahat ng mga Duterte, kaalyado ng mga Duterte, baka pati ako,” she added.
Despite the controversy, Remulla remains firm in his stance to carry out his duties with integrity and independence.
He is set to take his oath as the new Ombudsman on Thursday, October 9.
