The country is set to experience cooler weather soon as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the end of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat season.
In its latest advisory, PAGASA said that recent weather observations indicate a steady weakening of the Habagat in the past few weeks.
“Recent observations indicate that the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) has been weakening during the past few weeks. Moreover, a gradual change of the country’s weather pattern has been observed due to the strengthening of the high-pressure system over East Asia and the southward migration of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). Forecast models also show this trend in the coming days,” PAGASA stated.
The bureau added that this shift signals the start of the transition toward the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan season, which is expected to be declared in the coming weeks.
“With these developments, the Habagat season has officially ended. Likewise, this marks the termination of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas. The country is now transitioning to the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season, which will be observed and declared in the coming weeks,” it added.
The Amihan season typically brings cooler and less humid air, especially over the northern and eastern parts of the Philippines.
According to PAGASA, the Amihan usually begins by late October or early November and lasts until March of the following year.
With this transition, Filipinos can expect a gradual drop in temperature — a welcome sign of the approaching colder months.
