FLU CASES IN METRO MANILA SURGE PAST 2,000 — PSMID

The Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) has reported more than 2,000 flu cases in Metro Manila this October — a 22% increase compared to the previous month.

According to the PSMID’s Flu Task Force Report released on Saturday, October 25, a total of 2,028 influenza cases have been recorded in the region, with 98% identified as Influenza A, a strain known to cause severe pneumonia, especially among older adults and individuals with chronic illnesses.

The surveillance data were gathered from five major hospitals: Makati Medical Center, The Medical City, Chinese General Hospital, the Philippine General Hospital, and St. Luke’s Medical Center–Global City.

PSMID noted that rapid antigen test kits and multiplex PCR assays were used to confirm the flu cases in these facilities.

Amid the sharp rise, the organization underscored the importance of adhering to preventive measures while monitoring further developments.

“Flu vaccination, regular hand hygiene, proper cough etiquette, and consistent mask use are essential to prevent severe illness and safeguard high-risk groups–including young children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with underlying medical conditions,” the PSMID stated in its advisory.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health (DOH) recently launched its “Trangkaso Bye-bye” campaign to raise public awareness and promote flu prevention.

In its latest surveillance report, the DOH recorded 6,457 cases of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) from September 28 to October 11 — a 25% decrease compared to 8,628 cases reported during the same period in 2024.
