The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Monday the official start of the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan season, signaling the onset of cooler weather in the coming months.
According to PAGASA, recent weather patterns such as rising atmospheric pressure and lower temperatures across several areas indicate the transition to Amihan.
“Over the past few days, observations have indicated the strengthening of a high-pressure area over East Asia, which has caused a surge of northeasterly winds over Extreme Northern Luzon,” the agency said in its advisory.
Meteorologists also warned that the intensified Amihan may bring rough sea conditions over the northern seaboards of Luzon during the next two weeks due to strong wind surges.
The Amihan is expected to dominate most parts of the country, bringing cool and dry air and causing a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly during early mornings and late evenings. PAGASA also cautioned that shear lines and unfavorable sea conditions may occur as the season progresses.
Earlier this month, PAGASA officially declared the end of the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat season, marking the country’s transition from warm and humid weather to the cooler and breezier months ahead.
