DEPED RENEWS CALL FOR ADEQUATE FUNDING TO ADDRESS LITERACY CHALLENGES

The Department of Education (DepEd) has renewed its call for full and sustained funding to address the growing challenges in the country’s education sector, particularly the issue of functional literacy.

In a statement posted on its official Facebook page on Tuesday, November 4, DepEd emphasized the need to ensure that every learner receives equal opportunities for success.

“The Department of Education is calling for the full and sustained funding of all education mandates to address the country’s literacy challenges and give every learner a fair and equal chance to succeed,” the agency said.

DepEd also expressed its gratitude for the continued support of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., noting that the funds entrusted to the agency will be directed toward improving learning outcomes.

“With the support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., we are aligning resources, streamlining functions, and focusing on what matters most — foundational learning and literacy recovery,” the statement continued.

The department highlighted several ongoing reforms, including the rollout of the revised K-10 and Senior High School curricula, teacher training programs, the DepEd Principals Academy, expanded classroom and textbook initiatives, and the deployment of administrative officers to allow teachers to focus more on instruction.

“Together with all agencies, local governments, and partners, we are making sure that every peso invested in education truly counts for every Filipino learner,” DepEd concluded.

According to the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), around 24.8 million Filipinos remain functionally illiterate — a figure DepEd aims to reduce through sustained reforms and stronger investments in education.
