NBI REJECTS DEFENSOR’S CLAIMS AS “UNFOUNDED”

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Monday firmly refuted former Anakalusugan Partylist Representative Mike Defensor’s allegations that a supposed aide of former Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co and his pregnant wife were assaulted and secretly flown out of the country to evade the ongoing flood control corruption probe.

The NBI labeled the claims as “unfounded” and “unsupported by evidence,” noting that no complaint, report, medical record, or custody log showed the couple was harmed or ever held by the bureau.

“We categorically condemn any false, malicious, or unverified statements intended to undermine the credibility and integrity of our institution. We reaffirm our commitment to transparency, due process, and the rule of law,” the NBI said.

Defensor earlier alleged that John Paul Estrada—Co’s supposed former executive assistant—and his wife were beaten by NBI personnel and flown to Chile. Estrada had been linked to the scandal through retired Marine Orly Guteza, who claimed he delivered cash-filled suitcases to Co and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

The NBI said it has coordinated with the Bureau of Immigration to verify travel claims and is awaiting an official response. It also warned that spreading unverified accusations undermines public trust.

“The Bureau remains fully open to any formal investigation and welcome any legitimate inquiry to establish the truth,” it added, urging Defensor to present the evidence he promised. Without credible proof, the bureau said the accusations may lead to legal consequences.

“Absent any credible proof, these allegations remain unfounded, cannot be given weight, and may even lead to prosecution for its malicious intent to undermine the credibility and integrity of the Bureau,” the NBI said.
