Former broadcast journalist Ramon Tulfo suggested that the country would be in better shape if Senate President Tito Sotto were to temporarily assume the presidency in the event that calls to remove President Bongbong Marcos succeed and the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte is revived.
In an interview, Tulfo said that, in his view, Sotto is capable, citing the lawmaker’s long experience in public service since entering politics in 1988 as Quezon City Vice Mayor.
“Matalino si Tito. Kaya lang ‘yung imahe niyang napo-project dahil dun sa TV show nilang ‘Iskul Bukol,’” Tulfo said in a television interview, referring to Sotto’s 1980s comedy sitcom alongside his brother Vic Sotto and veteran comedian Joey de Leon.
Tulfo added that Sotto has been “misunderstood” by many Filipinos because of his comedy-themed shows and movies, but he believes Sotto possesses enough capability to lead the country.
“Kung si Tito, magandang (leader) yan, kasi si Tito matinong tao,” Tulfo said.
He also noted, “Akala lang natin (comedian) ‘yan. Si Tito, classmate ko ‘yan sa Letran. He graduated pinakabata sa amin dahil dalawang beses siyang na-accelerate.”
Tulfo clarified that while he sees Sotto as a suitable interim president if Marcos and Duterte are removed, he still believes his younger brother, Senator Raffy Tulfo, is the right candidate for the 2028 presidential elections.
“Si Raffy kasi, ang mga Tulfos, ang puso, nasa bayan kami. We go for the underdog. Karamihan ng Pinoy underdog eh. So I would support Raffy,” he said.
