DUTERTE WAIVES RIGHT TO APPEAR BEFORE ICC FOR INTERIM RELEASE RULING

Former President Rodrigo Duterte has formally waived his right to appear before the International Criminal Court (ICC) when the Appeals Chamber issues its judgment on his petition for interim release on November 28.

In a waiver dated November 25, the 80-year-old Duterte informed the chamber that he would not attend the proceedings in person and has authorized his legal team to represent him.

“I, Rodrigo Roa Duterte, waive my right to appear before the Appeals Chamber on 28 November 2025 at 10:30 and, consequently, instruct my lawyers to hear the judgment that will be rendered on my appeal against Pre-Trial Chamber I’s decision on interim release,” he stated.

The ICC said the ruling will be released at 5:30 p.m. Manila time.

Duterte has been detained at The Hague since March, facing charges of crimes against humanity over the deadly drug war that left thousands of mostly poor Filipinos killed.

His earlier appeal for interim release was denied on October 10, with the tribunal ruling that continued detention remained necessary under the Rome Statute.
