The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Friday rejected former President Rodrigo Duterte’s request for interim release while facing charges of crimes against humanity in The Hague, Netherlands.
During the ICC Appeals Chamber hearing on November 28, three appeals filed by Duterte’s camp were dismissed, keeping him in detention.
“The appeals chamber unanimously confirms the impugned decision,” said Presiding Judge Luz Del Carmen Ibañez.
Duterte was unable to attend the reading of the decision regarding his interim release due to the waiver he submitted. His legal counsel, Atty. Nicholas Kaufman, appeared before the chamber on his behalf.
The former president’s camp had filed an appeal on November 15 seeking “immediate” and “unconditional release.” Earlier in October, the ICC had also denied a temporary release request for humanitarian reasons.
The ICC grants interim release to detainees temporarily if they are not considered a flight risk, would not jeopardize the investigation, or are unlikely to reoffend in the alleged crimes.
