NO CHANGE YET IN US DUAL CITIZENSHIP POLICY, SAYS PH EMBASSY

There is no change yet in the current dual citizenship policy in the United States, the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC said, following a proposed Senate bill aimed at ending it.

According to the embassy, the bill is still at the proposed stage and will undergo lengthy deliberations, so it may change or may not be passed at all.

“The bill is currently a legislative proposal and has not yet been enacted into law. It will go through several stages of lengthy deliberation and may or may not proceed depending on the decisions of the U.S. Congress,” the embassy said in a statement on Saturday.

“U.S. lawmakers will have to carefully consider the provisions of the bill, given its possible significant impact on major immigrant groups in the country,” they added.

The embassy said the Philippine Foreign Service Posts in the US will continue to monitor the bill’s progress and advised Filipino-Americans to exercise caution in taking any steps to renounce their Philippine citizenship, as it cannot be reversed.

Under the proposed bill pushed by US Senator Bernie Moreno, an Ohio Republican, Americans would be required to hold exclusive US citizenship.
