HOUSE TO WAIT ON SUPREME COURT BEFORE MOVING ON VP SARA’S IMPEACHMENT

The next steps of the House of Representatives in the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte hinge on the Supreme Court’s ruling on a motion for reconsideration (MR), according to House Committee on Public Accounts Chairperson and Bicol Saro Partylist Representative Terry Ridon.

“Only after the Supreme Court resolves the MR can the House directly look into impeachable acts of the Vice President,” Ridon said, urging the high court to decide on the motion regarding its earlier decision that blocked the Senate from continuing hearings on Duterte’s impeachment case.

“If the MR is resolved in favor of the House, the impeachment will proceed to trial in the Senate. If resolved against the House, a new complaint may be filed against the Vice President in February, under the new Supreme Court impeachment guidelines,” he added.

Ridon emphasized that impeachment proceedings must be based on truth, evidence, and principle.

“The House will proceed against each and every impeachable officer if they commit impeachable offenses such as betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes, among other grounds for impeachment as stated in the 1987 Constitution,” he said.

“The House of Representatives will perform its constitutional mandate on impeachment against any and all impeachable officers, as soon as verified impeachment complaints are filed for our resolution,” Ridon added.

In July, the Supreme Court declared the House’s impeachment case against Duterte unconstitutional for violating the one-year bar rule and the Vice President’s right to due process, preventing the Senate from proceeding with the hearings.

The high court indicated that a new impeachment case could be filed against Duterte starting February 6, 2026.
