FILIPINO FISHERMEN INJURED IN WEST PHILIPPINE SEA WATER CANNON INCIDENT

Three Filipino fishermen were injured after Chinese vessels used water cannons against an estimated 20 Filipino fishing boats at Escoda Shoal on Friday, December 12, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.

According to PCG Spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela, water cannons from Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) vessels 21559 and 21562, along with the Chinese Maritime Militia (CMM), targeted legally operating Filipino fishermen, causing damage to two boats.

The CCG’s Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats also reportedly cut the anchor lines of several fishing vessels, putting crews at risk amid strong waves.

When attempting to assist the affected fishermen, the CCG reportedly blocked PCG vessels MRRV-4403 and MRRV-4411, with CCG-23519 approaching within just 35 yards during nighttime navigation.

Despite the danger, the PCG reached the fishermen and provided immediate medical attention, food, ice, and fuel on Saturday. The PCG also coordinated with MV Pamalakaya to ensure the safety of the fishermen as they continued their operations.

Tarriela noted that China issued a statement recognizing the use of “necessary control measures” against Filipino fishermen.

“The PCG calls on the Chinese Coast Guard to adhere to internationally recognized standards of conduct, prioritizing the preservation of life at sea over pretensions of law enforcement that jeopardize the lives of innocent fishermen,” Tarriela said.
