The Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Monday, December 15 that it will maintain its security and operational posture despite the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) announcing a four-day unilateral ceasefire for the holidays.
PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño said the leadership is meeting to discuss the CPP declaration.
“Kasalukuyang nagmi-meeting ang PNP leadership kaugnay ng nasabing declaration of ceasefire. Nananatili ang security at operational posture ng PNP kaugnay ng nasabing declaration sapagkat ito ay unilateral,” Tuaño said during a press briefing.
He added that the public will be informed of the PNP’s decision after the leadership meeting concludes.
The CPP directed its armed wing, the New People’s Army (NPA), to observe a ceasefire from 12:00 a.m. of December 25 to 11:59 p.m. of December 26, and again from 12:00 a.m. of December 31 to 11:59 p.m. of January 1.
During this period, NPA units will remain on “active defense mode” amid continued AFP operations and stay alert for possible attacks.
The ceasefire was declared in solidarity with Filipinos during the holidays and to mark the CPP’s 57th anniversary. The group also encouraged cultural and educational activities. The PNP has not yet said whether it will reciprocate the ceasefire.
