PHILIPPINES SWEEPS SEA GAMES 5-ON-5 BASKETBALL GOLDS

The Philippines asserted its dominance in 5-on-5 basketball at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games as Gilas Pilipinas Men and Gilas Pilipinas Women both defeated host Thailand to capture gold medals on Friday, December 19, at the Nimibitur Stadium in Bangkok.

The Filipino squads spoiled Thailand’s bid for a sixth straight women’s title and a first-ever men’s gold in the event.
Gilas Pilipinas Women reclaimed the SEA Games crown with a hard-fought 73-70 victory.

Veteran Afril Bernardino led the charge with 19 points, sealing the country’s third women’s basketball gold after titles in 2019 and 2021, following a silver finish in Cambodia 2023.

Gilas Pilipinas Men overcame a slow first half before pulling away in the third quarter to secure a 70-64 win.

Jamie Malonzo delivered a standout performance with 17 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, and three assists, powering the Philippines to its 20th men’s basketball gold in 23 SEA Games appearances.

The twin victories capped a strong showing for Team Philippines, which stood sixth in the medal standings with 50 golds, 73 silvers, and 153 bronzes.

The 33rd SEA Games officially concluded with its closing ceremony on Saturday, December 20.
