DPWH REPORTS 60% OF METRO MANILA WATERWAYS DECLOGGED

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that it has declogged 60.1% of waterways in Metro Manila as part of its “Oplan Kontra Baha” initiative, up to the last week of December.

According to the DPWH on Saturday, 2,770.61 cubic meters of debris were removed from the target 48 locations with 4,606.80 cubic meters, while 7,312.06 cubic meters, or 4.2% of waterways, were desilted from the target 175,582.66 cubic meters across 31 locations.

In the Northern Quadrant, covering Caloocan, Valenzuela, San Juan, Mandaluyong, and Quezon City, drainage declogging reached 54.6% and desilting 5%. The South Quadrant, including Pasay, Makati, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Pateros, and Taguig, achieved 63.8% declogging and 3.2% desilting.

In the West Quadrant, composed of Manila, Navotas, and Malabon, 63.2% of drainage was declogged and 36.5% desilted, while in the East Quadrant, covering Pasig and Marikina, declogging reached 62.5% and desilting 5.2%.

“Oplan Kontra Baha” targets 142.4 kilometers of rivers, creeks, and esteros, along with 333.15 kilometers of drainage systems in Metro Manila, aiming to ensure proper water flow on main roads and prevent flooding.
