The Electric Vehicles Association of the Philippines (EVAP) has expressed support for the Land Transportation Office’s (LTO) strict enforcement of the ban on electric tricycles and bicycles along Metro Manila’s major roads, but called for clearer rules and wider implementation.
The LTO began the crackdown Friday on EDSA, C-5 Road, Roxas Boulevard, and Quirino Avenue up to Magallanes-SLEX, with violators facing fines and possible impoundment.
EVAP President Edmund Araga said the move addresses safety concerns but stressed the need for clarity.
“It’s about time that this is to be implemented as to give regulations that has been set forth by the Land Transportation Office. And it paves way for addressing concerns on safety,” he said.
He added, “It’s about time that the commuters and the users and yung kung sinuman na mga nag-cocommute malaman talaga nila kung hanggang saan lang ang limit na sasakyan na pinoproduce at hindi lahat po ay pwede na gamitin ito sa mga areas of concern.”
Araga noted that certain categories of e-trikes, such as L3 and L4, already comply with inspection and registration requirements but lack clear regulations on modifications.
LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao reported that 114 motorists were apprehended on Friday, mostly along EDSA, Roxas Boulevard, and Quirino Avenue. He said more personnel will be deployed to ensure full compliance with the ban.
