The Manila City government defended the increase in garbage collection fees, saying it is the first adjustment since 2013.
The new rates were enacted through City Ordinance No. 9151, approved by the City Council in November 2025 and signed by Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso on December 1, 2025.
City Treasurer Atty. Paul Vega said the hike was based on a thorough study to reflect the current volume of waste and service costs.
“Ang umiiral na garbage fee rates ay huling na-update noong 2013 pa o higit isang dekada na at hindi na sapat sa kasalukuyang sitwasyon,” he said.
The LGU clarified that the new garbage collection fees apply only to business establishments and not to households.
