ADIONG: IMPEACHMENT TALK MAY BE POLITICAL DISTRACTION

Lanao del Sur 1st District Representative Zia Alonto Adiong on Monday said discussions of a possible impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. could be a politically motivated attempt to derail the administration’s anti-corruption efforts, particularly targeting officials implicated in the flood control controversy.

“If you ask me, this could probably be… a partisan or politically motivated move in order to slow down any attempt of this current administration to run after… those who have been named and those who are being charged with corruption in relation to the current situation that we’re facing,” Adiong said.

“In order to at least try to evade probably or to segue the attention to another angle, I think this is one of the tactics and strategy to slow down the effort of this current administration to run after the corrupt officials whose names were implicated in this mess,” he added.

Adiong noted that so far, no individual or group has confirmed preparing an impeachment complaint against Marcos.

“Well, as far as I know, I haven’t heard of any sector or any individual who would want to file an impeachment complaint against the President,” he said.

“Filing an impeachment complaint is one thing, but having the support for that impeachment complaint is another,” he added.

The lawmaker also highlighted the timing, noting that political noise tends to rise during the latter half of an administration’s term.

“Normally what we experienced in the past is that during the last three years of the current administration, political noise actually started to take over public discourse,” Adiong said.

He emphasized that impeachment should be based on solid factual evidence and constitutional grounds rather than rumor or political maneuvering.

“The House of Representatives will also want to have solid grounds and evidence, factual evidence, as to why they need to support this,” he said.

Adiong stressed that focus should remain on governance and accountability, not politically-driven distractions.
