The Marcos administration has maintained its support for the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), brushing aside calls to abolish the body despite resignations, vacancies, and growing criticism from political figures.
Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. continues to trust the ICI, even as some critics have questioned its viability.
“Sa ngayon po na andiyan pa rin po ang tiwala ng Pangulo sa ICI,” Castro said, cautioning against speculating on the commission’s fate.
Concerns have mounted over the ICI’s ability to function after it was left with only one remaining commissioner, its chairperson, former Associate Justice Andres Reyes Jr., following the resignation of other members.
Malacañang, however, dismissed claims that the commission has been rendered ineffective, saying its mandate can still be carried out despite the lack of a full lineup.
“Kahit po nag-iisa na si Justice Reyes… hindi naman po ito makakahadlang para sila ay makapag-rekomenda ng pagsasampa ng kaso,” Castro said, noting that recommendations to the Ombudsman or the Department of Justice do not require a quorum.
When asked about appointing new commissioners, Castro said the matter remains within the President’s discretion and stressed that vacancies do not automatically suspend the ICI’s work.
