FIRST IMPEACHMENT COMPLAINT PUTS SANDRO MARCOS IN SPOTLIGHT

The first impeachment complaint against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., alleging constitutional violations, graft, corruption, and betrayal of public trust, has raised questions about the role of his son, House Majority Leader Sandro Marcos, should the case reach the plenary of the House of Representatives.

Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro said Tuesday it was unclear if father and son had discussed the matter, but emphasized that the President has consistently instructed Sandro to focus on his duties.

The complaint, filed by a lawyer on Monday, cited several issues including the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, unprogrammed budget appropriations, alleged kickbacks in flood control projects, and drug use claims. It marks the first impeachment case against Marcos since he assumed office in 2022.

The Palace underscored that Sandro Marcos must act according to his legislative mandate, regardless of family ties, as the impeachment process unfolds.
