Players of the popular rhythm game Maimai DX have voiced growing frustration online following recent changes at Quantum arcade locations where the game’s payment system has shifted from the traditional Silver Coins/tokens to gacha coins, a more expensive and less flexible currency. Community discussions and player reports show dissatisfaction over the increased costs and the loss of previously usable arcade tokens.
Change in Accepted Currency at Arcades
According to multiple player posts in rhythm game communities, several Quantum arcade branches in Manila and elsewhere have modified the coin slots on their Maimai DX machines to accept only gacha coins, the same currency used for prize and gachapon machines in many arcades instead of the older Silver Coins or bulk token packs that once offered better value.
Under the new system, players report that one gacha coin now costs about ₱50, and each play of Maimai DX requires one gacha coin per credit, whereas before players could often use larger token bundles (e.g., 100 Silver Coins for ₱300) that provided cheaper per-play costs. With the previous token system, players could also accumulate and use unused tokens more flexibly across different arcade games, something no longer possible under the gacha coin arrangement.
Community Backlash and Cost Concerns
Many Maimai DX players have taken to Reddit and other forums to express frustration with the change, noting that the new gacha coin payout structure feels like a price increase for the same gameplay experience particularly since there are no bulk discounts for purchasing multiple gacha coins in one transaction. This has led some players to calculate that a single game now effectively costs about ₱50-₱60 per credit, with no practical way to reduce that cost through token packs or rewards previously available.
Some players have even jokingly suggested quitting the game or playing less because of the change, while others criticized the impact on collectors who had saved older coins or tokens that are now incompatible with the updated payment system.
Why This Matters to Rhythm Gamers
For many rhythm gaming enthusiasts, the cost of arcade credits is a significant factor in how often they play particularly in games like Maimai DX, which can involve long sessions as players attempt higher difficulty levels or multiplayer matches. Increasing the per-play cost without apparent added benefits beyond convenience has left some players feeling that the experience is now less accessible, especially for frequent or competitive players.
While game operators have not publicly commented on the reasoning behind the shift which might be tied to standardizing currency systems across arcade machines or addressing logistical issues with outdated token mechanisms, players are watching closely to see if the decision will remain permanent or if future adjustments could address community concerns.
