ISKO DEFENDS HIGHER GARBAGE FEES IN MANILA

Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso on Monday, January 19, explained that rising garbage collection costs prompted the city government to increase garbage fees beginning 2026.

Speaking during his Talk to the People program, Domagoso noted that the last adjustment was made in 2013, making the hike necessary to reflect the actual cost of waste collection and disposal.

He cited several factors behind the higher expenses, including the nearly doubled volume of garbage in the city, rising fuel prices, increased wages of garbage collectors, longer hauling distances to the San Mateo, Rizal landfill, and unsettled commercial obligations left by the previous administration.

Domagoso admitted the decision was difficult but emphasized it was needed to address financial challenges and ensure funds for essential public services.

He appealed to residents and business owners to support the city’s waste management efforts, stressing that responsibility must be shared.

“Help me, garbage problem is a shared responsibility. Tulong tulong tayo. Help me to make Manila great again,” the mayor said.

The city government continues to encourage cooperation in waste reduction and proper disposal as part of its drive to improve sanitation and public services in Manila.
