MAKABAYAN EYES NEW IMPEACHMENT VS VP SARA

Former Gabriela Partylist Representative Liza Maza confirmed on Monday, January 26, that the Makabayan bloc will lodge a fresh impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte next month.

Maza made the announcement as militant groups filed a separate impeachment case against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.

“Gusto naming i-anunsiyo na next week, magfa-file kami, or magrere-file ng impeachment complaint laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte,” she said in a chance interview.

Pressed for details, Maza explained they would “announce it as soon as it is finalized. But it will be next week.”

She later clarified, “I-aannounce namin kung kailangan ang eksaktong date kami magfa-file,” noting that the earliest filing date is February 6, when the one-year prohibition on initiating another complaint against Duterte expires.

Under House rules, impeachment complaints must be received by the Office of the Secretary General, which does not operate on Fridays.

Duterte previously became the first Vice President in Philippine history to be impeached during the 19th Congress, when more than one-third of House members adopted a complaint anchored on seven articles of impeachment. The case was transmitted to the Senate on February 5, 2025.

In July, however, the Supreme Court declared the complaint unconstitutional, leaving proceedings in limbo. The House later filed a motion for reconsideration.

With the one-year bar set to lapse on February 6, Makabayan bloc members and their allies are preparing to refile the case, signaling renewed political confrontation over Duterte’s tenure.
