ALEX EALA SHINES IN HOME DEBUT AT PH WOMEN’S OPEN

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala delighted fans at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center on Monday night, dominating Russia’s Alina Charaeva 6-1, 6-2 in the inaugural Philippine Women’s Open, a WTA 125 tournament.

The 20-year-old ace said playing a professional match on home soil was a special experience.

“I think it really holds a special place in my heart. It’s my first-ever professional match at home. And I was able to spend it around family and around supporters and surrounded by love. So it’s really special,” Eala said during the post-match press conference.

Eala’s parents, Mike and Rizza, and other family members were present to witness the victory, emphasizing the importance of staying connected to loved ones despite a demanding international schedule.

“Siyempre sobrang halaga. That’s what keeps me grounded and makes me feel at home.  That’s really what at home means for me — to be with family — and to spend the time with the people who love me and I know will be there for me through thick and thin,” she added.

The WTA No. 49 player called the moment “a full circle” for both Philippine tennis and her personal journey, taking pride in how far the sport has come in the country.

Eala will next compete in the Round of 16 on Wednesday, with her opponent to be determined by Tuesday’s results.
