Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros on Monday said she is open to running for president in 2028, but only if she is chosen as the standard-bearer of a united opposition.
Speaking at a media briefing, Hontiveros clarified that her recent meeting with senior Liberal Party officials was not meant to discuss specific candidates, but to explore unity among opposition forces ahead of the next national elections.
“I remain open, I remain willing… kung piliin ng united opposition,” she said, underscoring that cohesion is essential to mount a strong and credible challenge in 2028.
Last week, Hontiveros met with key Liberal Party figures, including Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino, Representative Chel Diokno, former Senate President Franklin Drilon, and former Vice President Leni Robredo.
When asked if she would consider running for vice president instead, Hontiveros said she is open to any role that the coalition agrees on.
“I would be willing to take on any task na hiningi ng united opposition,” she said.
She also addressed questions related to impeachment issues, saying her priority remains her constitutional role as a senator.
“Kapag pag-uusapan impeachment, klaro ang focus ko… na maghanda maging senator-judge at timbangin ang mga ebidensya,” Hontiveros said.
