EDSA REHABILITATION PHASE 1 NEARLY HALFWAY DONE

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that the first phase of the long-awaited rehabilitation of EDSA is now close to halfway done and remains on track for completion by July 2026.

Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said during a press conference that the project is progressing steadily.

“We are currently close to 50% na ng phase 1 ng (EDSA rehabilitation) so we want to complete this all by July 2026 with the sidewalks,” Dizon noted.

While the full Phase 1 package includes sidewalk improvements that may extend until June or July, Dizon explained that sections of the carriageway—used by motorists—are expected to be finished earlier, with roadworks targeted for completion by May 2026. This would allow drivers to benefit from smoother road conditions ahead of the project’s full completion.

To maximize progress, DPWH plans to request a permit from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) to conduct 24/7 rehabilitation work during Holy Week, when traffic is lighter.

Dizon also revealed that preparations for Phase 2 are underway, with procurement documents nearing completion.

Inspections are scheduled toward the end of February and will continue into March to ensure ongoing works meet standards and timelines.

He added that the new plan for EDSA rehabilitation will take only eight months, shorter than the previous two-year timetable.

EDSA, stretching 23.8 kilometers across six cities—Caloocan, Quezon City, San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati, and Pasay—remains Metro Manila’s longest and most congested highway.

The rehabilitation project includes expanding pedestrian lanes, constructing shared bike lanes and repair stops, building waiting sheds, and removing obstructions along commuter routes.
