Caloocan City 2nd District Representative Egay Erice believes former Vice President and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo is the only figure who could pose a major threat to Vice President Sara Duterte in the 2028 presidential elections.
This comes after Duterte formally confirmed her intent to run for president in the next national polls.
“Isa lang ang maaring ipanlaban kay VP Sara, si former VP Leni Robredo lang,” Erice said.
Erice suggested that if Robredo runs, she could potentially team up with Senate Deputy Majority Leader Risa Hontiveros as her running mate, an idea earlier floated by former Budget Secretary and Liberal Party stalwart Butch Abad.
According to Erice, Robredo’s clean record on corruption makes her a strong contender against Duterte.
“Dapat si Leni (tumakbo), siya lang ang walang isyu ng corruption eh. Ang isyu ngayon sa ating bayan ang corruption,” he added.
Abad, however, acknowledged that much could still change given the long preparation period ahead of the 2028 elections.
He noted that the fractured alliance between Duterte and the administration of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. could boost the opposition’s chances.
While Robredo has previously said she intends to continue the legacy of her late husband, former Naga City Mayor and Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo, Abad emphasized that Philippine politics remains fluid and potential candidates may still shift before the elections.
