The Philippine National Police announced Sunday that it is on heightened alert for potential demonstrations during the International Criminal Court proceedings against former President Rodrigo Duterte.
PNP chief Police General Jose Nartatez Jr. said authorities are monitoring possible mass gatherings nationwide.
“Our security measures are in place to ensure the peaceful conduct of any activity in public places,” he stated.
Nartatez emphasized that police will protect demonstrators’ rights while maintaining peace. Regional units have been instructed to pre-position Civil Disturbance Management teams and have medical responders on standby.
“Maximum tolerance will be strictly observed, but the law will be upheld. Our personnel are instructed to remain professional and avoid any confrontation,” he said.
He also urged the public to remain calm and avoid letting emotions spark violence.
“Huwag po sana tayong magpadala sa emosyon na maaaring maging dahilan ng sakitan at paglabag sa batas. Let us not bring the conflict to our streets,” Nartatez added.
The PNP chief stressed impartiality:
“Ang PNP ay walang kinikilingan; tayo ay para sa kapayapaan at seguridad ng bawat Pilipino.”
Duterte remains detained at the ICC Detention Center in Scheveningen, The Hague, ahead of his confirmation of charges hearing.
