Opposition leaders remain hopeful that former Vice President and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo may consider running for president in 2028, according to Liberal Party President and former Quezon 4th District Representative Erin Tañada.
Coalition talks to back a unified candidate are ongoing, with a clearer direction expected later this year.
“There’s still enough time to hopefully convince Mayor Leni to run if she really wants it,” Tañada said in a television interview.
Robredo has remained cautious about her political plans, emphasizing her contentment as Naga City mayor.
Tañada noted that Senator Kiko Pangilinan, her 2022 running mate, recently visited her and raised the possibility of another presidential run.
Robredo reportedly replied, “Iba naman. Masaya na ako dito sa Naga.”
Despite her reserved stance, Pangilinan urged her not to close the door on 2028.
Tañada added that opposition allies are still exploring a single slate to challenge Vice President Sara Duterte, who has declared her presidential intentions.
“I hope so. She’s keeping her cards close to her chest,” Tañada added.
