Malacañang clarified Tuesday that the government is not holding any talks on rejoining the International Criminal Court (ICC).
“There is no discussion on plan of rejoining the ICC, as of this date,” Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said on February 24.
Her statement followed resolutions filed by lawmakers urging the Philippines to return to the tribunal, which is currently handling crimes against humanity charges against former President Rodrigo Duterte.
The country withdrew from the ICC in 2018 after the court began a preliminary probe into Duterte’s war on drugs. Complaints against him were lodged in 2017 over killings linked to the campaign.
In 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the government was studying the possibility of rejoining, but no further action has been taken since.
