Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has directed a review of the use of police mobility assets as part of fuel conservation measures, anticipating further increases in petroleum prices due to tensions in the Middle East.
Fuel costs have steadily climbed in recent weeks, with gasoline and diesel prices rising by more than ₱1 per liter this week. Experts warn that the upward trend will continue amid global uncertainty.
While the impact remains manageable for now, Nartatez said the Philippine National Police must prepare for possible scenarios.
“We need to prepare and plan for this scenario without sacrificing our mandate to be more visible, more responsive and more reliable in terms of ensuring the safety of the people in every street and in every community,” he emphasized.
The PNP chief noted that maintaining peace and order is crucial, especially after a 25% decline in focus crimes during the first two months of the year.
He said this is where the Enhanced Managing Police Operations (EMPO) framework becomes essential, ensuring efficient deployment of personnel and resources while sustaining law enforcement objectives.
EMPO, which emphasizes data-driven and precise police responses, has been credited for the drop in crime volume and improved coordination among units.
Nartatez instructed chiefs of police and unit heads to conduct the review under the guidance of the Directorate for Operations and other concerned offices at both national and regional headquarters.
“This is part of our operational readiness in response to the President’s order. But we assure the public that we remain focused on our mandate of maintaining peace and order and implementing crime prevention measures,” Nartatez said.
