LACSON URGES PUBLIC TO REPORT EARLY OIL PRICE HIKES

Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson has called on the public to report gasoline stations that raise pump prices ahead of the scheduled adjustment, following reports of early increases.

Lacson said premature price hikes violate Republic Act No. 8479 or the Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act of 1998 and Republic Act No. 7394 or the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

“Amid reports that some gasoline stations have already increased prices, they must be reported to authorities. Here’s why – Raising prices ahead of schedule or hoarding fuel may be liable for: 1) Hoarding & Profiteering – RA 8479; and 2) Unfair or deceptive sales practice – RA 7394,” Lacson posted on his social media account.

He added that consumers may report violations to the Philippine National Police (PNP) or local government units (LGUs), noting that Energy Secretary Sharon Garin has already instructed agencies to monitor and report irregularities for possible criminal and administrative action.

Lacson stressed that vigilance and immediate reporting of irregularities will help authorities enforce the law and protect the public against abusive pricing practices.

RA 8479 prohibits cartelization, predatory pricing, and other anti-competitive practices, while RA 7394 protects consumers against deceptive, unfair, and exploitative sales practices.

Filipinos are bracing for another round of fuel price hikes amid rising global crude costs and supply concerns linked to tensions in the Middle East.

Reports indicate possible increases of ₱24.92 per liter for kerosene, ₱19.62 for diesel, and ₱10.43 for gasoline, with final price movements expected to be announced on Monday, March 9.
