MARCOS SEEKS EMERGENCY POWERS TO CUT FUEL TAXES

Malacañang is preparing to formally ask Congress to grant President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. emergency powers that would allow the government to reduce fuel excise taxes, a measure aimed at easing the burden of rising oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.

In New York City, Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed that the request is underway, noting that the Department of Energy (DOE) has been closely coordinating with the Palace on possible interventions.

Castro also disclosed that the DOE has issued show-cause orders to 54 gasoline stations suspected of unjustified fuel price hikes. Authorities are reviewing the cases to protect consumers from potential abuse in the energy sector.

She cautioned that establishments found guilty of irregularities could face severe sanctions.

“Kapag po napakita rito na sila po ay may mga fraudulent acts, maaari po silang makanselan ang permit sa kanilang mga transaction,” Castro said.

According to Malacañang, granting emergency powers would enable the administration to swiftly adjust fuel excise taxes if necessary, providing immediate relief to consumers while regulators continue monitoring compliance.

Officials emphasized that the move is part of a broader government response to global oil market volatility and its impact on domestic fuel costs.
