PNP UNITS ON ALERT FOR DUTERTE ARREST ANNIVERSARY PROTESTS

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has placed its units on alert ahead of protest actions marking the first anniversary of former President Rodrigo Duterte’s arrest and transfer to the Netherlands on March 11.

PNP Chief Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities have monitored plans for motorcades and other activities in Metro Manila and several provincial urban centers.

“We are closely monitoring developments and coordinating with local units to ensure public safety,” Nartatez said.

Authorities noted that the planned motorcade route may stretch along EDSA, ending at Villamor Airbase. Similar events are also being organized in Davao City, the Duterte family’s political stronghold.

Duterte was arrested under a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with crimes against humanity linked to his administration’s anti-drug campaign.

Government records show more than 6,000 suspected drug pushers and users were killed in police operations, with thousands more deaths attributed to vigilante groups.

The arrest has heightened political tensions between the camp of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the Duterte family, led by Vice President Sara Duterte, who has declared her intention to run for president in 2028.

Nartatez emphasized that while the police respect the public’s right to peaceful assembly, they must also maintain order.

“While we respect the right to peaceful assembly, we also have the mandate to ensure that there will be no incident that will disrupt normal activities and threaten peace and order.”

He reminded officers to exercise maximum tolerance and professionalism.

“Remember, our strength lies in professionalism and restraint. Uphold the law, protect our citizens, and lead by example,” Nartatez said.

The PNP will coordinate closely with event organizers and local government units, while urging participants to remain disciplined and follow instructions to avoid conflict.
