DE LIMA URGES PH’S RETURN TO ICC

Mamamayang Liberal Party-list Representative Leila de Lima has pressed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to reconsider his position and lead the Philippines back into the International Criminal Court (ICC), warning that continued absence from the tribunal sends a troubling signal both domestically and internationally.

De Lima argued that ICC membership would strengthen safeguards against future leaders who may commit grave international crimes, stressing that accountability mechanisms remain vital when local institutions fail.

“BBM should change his position and make the Philippines rejoin the International Criminal Court. His current and continued posture sends the wrong signal both to the Filipino people and the global community,” she said.

The former senator emphasized that ICC membership would reassure Filipinos that justice remains possible even if domestic systems prove unable or unwilling to prosecute perpetrators.

“Future tyrants and mass murderers would be brought to justice and held to account for their atrocity crimes, should our domestic system prove unwilling or unable to investigate and try the cases.”

She cautioned that staying outside the ICC could weaken the country’s global reputation and cast doubt on its commitment to accountability.

“By remaining outside the ICC, the government risks perpetuating doubts about our country’s commitment to justice and weakening the political and moral resolve to go after perpetrators and masterminds of international crimes.”

Despite the appeal, Malacañang maintained its current stance. Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro, speaking in New York, said President Marcos remains disinclined to pursue rejoining the ICC.

The Philippines formally withdrew from the tribunal in 2019 under then-President Rodrigo Duterte, following scrutiny of the government’s controversial anti-drug campaign.

This renewed call highlights the ongoing debate over international accountability and the country’s role in global justice mechanisms.
