Navotas City Lone District Representative Toby Tiangco said the performance ratings of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte should not be directly compared, citing their distinct mandates and public expectations.
In a recent television interview, Tiangco explained that the scope of responsibilities between the two offices influences how the public evaluates them.
“But you cannot compare the performance ratings of the Vice President and the performance ratings of the President. Kasi iba yung inaasahan na trabaho doon sa Presidente at iba yung inaasahang trabaho doon sa Bise Presidente,” he said.
Tiangco noted that expectations for the Vice President are “lighter,” making it easier to satisfy public perception.
“Admittedly, mas magaan yung inaasahan na trabaho doon sa Bise Presidente at natural kung mas magaan yung inaasahang trabaho sa kanya, mas madali nyang i-satisfy yung mga tao,” he added.
He stressed that trust ratings may be a more appropriate measure for comparison, as they are not directly tied to official duties.
On Vice President Duterte’s prospects as a presidential candidate in the 2028 elections, Tiangco acknowledged her strong chances but emphasized that “no one is unbeatable.”
“Syempre kung ngayon yung eleksyon mataas yung chances nya. But no one is unbeatable,” he said.
“Ang kailangan lang gawin talaga is to perform because para sa akin, the performance is the best politics. There is no substitute for performance.”
Tiangco also said President Marcos Jr.’s ratings could improve if the government delivers more tangible assistance to Filipinos, particularly amid rising fuel prices.
“At nakita naman natin yung performance rating ng presidente ay hindi na bumaba. Kailangan lang talaga matulungan yung ating mga kababayan, lalong lalo na if they want to improve the ratings on the part of the President. Dapat talaga maramdaman yung tulong nya sa krisis na ‘to,” he said.
