Senator Win Gatchalian on Wednesday pushed for a ban on social media use for minors aged 16 and below, citing the foiled school attack plot in Laguna as proof of how online platforms can dangerously influence young people.
The Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group earlier intercepted seven 15-year-olds allegedly planning a mass shooting after being guided by an unidentified individual online.
Authorities said the group received instructions through digital platforms, including how to acquire firearms, before they were tracked and stopped.
Gatchalian said he would file legislation restricting minors’ access to social media, pointing to international examples.
“I will file a bill banning social media use for minors aged 16 and below, a move that follows the examples of countries like Australia, Denmark, and Norway,” he said.
“Huwag na nating hintaying lumala ang problemang ito ng mga kabataan bago tayo kumilos.”
The senator also warned that digital communities, including gaming platforms, may have contributed to shaping the teens’ actions.
“Equally concerning is the state of students’ mental health, underscoring the need for stronger school-based support systems,” he added.
The minors are now under the custody of social welfare authorities as investigators continue tracing the online networks allegedly linked to the plot.
