DOLE URGES DATA-DRIVEN APPROACH IN WAGE POLICY DELIBERATIONS

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has urged lawmakers to ground wage-setting policies on solid data and comprehensive analysis, emphasizing the need to strike a balance between fair compensation for workers and overall economic stability.

The National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC), an attached agency of DOLE, serves as an advisory body under the Wage Rationalization Act (Republic Act No. 6727).

While it does not have legislative power, the commission provides Congress with technical guidance during deliberations on wage measures.

In coordination with other government agencies, the NWPC submits evidence-based reports, wage computations, and policy simulations to guide lawmakers in crafting informed decisions. These inputs are designed to protect workers’ welfare, account for employers’ capacity to pay, and sustain economic growth.

DOLE stressed that its role remains purely advisory and respects the independence of Congress, which holds the final authority on wage legislation.

“Beyond rhetoric, our mandate is to analyze the economic landscape and provide actionable insights that promote fair wages while maintaining long-term economic stability,” the department said.
