Malacañang on Tuesday distanced itself from reports claiming that the Independent Commission on Infrastructure (ICI) had cleared former House Speaker and Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez over alleged irregularities in flood control projects.
Communications Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the commission has already submitted its accomplishment report to the Office of the Ombudsman, which now holds jurisdiction over the case.
“Hayaan na lang po na ang Ombudsman ang mag-reveal nito bilang respeto po,” Castro said, adding that the ICI itself may also clarify its recommendations if needed.
When asked about the commission’s ₱41-million budget, Castro said she had no information on whether the full amount had been utilized or if a portion remained unused.
She explained that the funds remain valid until December 31, 2026, and any unspent balance will revert to the National Treasury’s general fund.
The ICI earlier clarified that it did not declare Romualdez free of liability in the controversy, noting that the matter has already been referred to the Ombudsman for appropriate action.
