PNP PREPARES FOR POTENTIAL PROTESTS ON DUTERTE’S 81ST BIRTHDAY

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has begun preparations for possible protest actions ahead of the 81st birthday of former President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

This will be his second birthday under the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

According to the PNP, personnel will be deployed in areas where supporters of the former president, as well as members of his family, are expected to hold protest activities.

“We are laying the groundwork to ensure that public assemblies remain orderly and secure. Our priority is to maintain public safety while providing a protected space for our fellow citizens to exercise their right to peaceful expression,” said PNP Chief Jose Melence Nartatez Jr.

While the police said it respects any activities planned for Saturday, it emphasized that officers will remain on alert.

“Inirerespeto naman ng kapulisan ang mga aktibidad na kanilang gagawin. Nakaalerto ang PNP upang siguraduhin na ligtas at matahimik ang gagawing pagprotesta sa araw na iyon,” Nartatez added.

The PNP is also expected to coordinate with rally organizers to help ensure demonstrations remain peaceful.

Duterte celebrated his 80th birthday under ICC custody last year following his arrest on March 11, 2025, in connection with charges of crimes against humanity linked to his controversial anti-drug campaign.
