The United Filipino Consumers and Commuters (UFCC) has called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to heed public sentiment and consider implementing a wealth tax targeting the country’s richest individuals.
UFCC president RJ Javellana emphasized that the administration should prioritize ordinary citizens over the interests of big corporations.
He further noted that corporations should also be covered by the proposed measure, even if the process may take time.
The proposed wealth tax would apply to “super-rich” Filipinos with assets exceeding ₱1 billion. The idea has also been raised in Congress, with the ACT Teachers Party-list filing House Bill No. 258 to establish a framework for the measure.
