NO NATIONWIDE WAGE HIKE ON LABOR DAY, DOLE CLARIFIES

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has clarified that there will be no across-the-board minimum wage increase on May 1, Labor Day, emphasizing that wage adjustments remain under the authority of regional wage boards.

Labor Undersecretary Benedicto Ernesto Bitonio Jr. explained that any changes in workers’ salaries are determined by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards, which assess economic conditions within their respective areas before issuing wage orders.

He noted that unless Congress enacts a law mandating a nationwide wage hike, the power to implement salary increases will continue to rest with these regional bodies.

The statement comes after the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) renewed its call in March for a ₱200 daily wage increase. The labor group cited potential economic pressures linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East as a reason for the proposed adjustment.

DOLE acknowledged the concerns raised by labor groups but reiterated that all wage increase petitions must go through established procedures. This includes compliance with review processes and scheduled deliberations by the regional boards, even in situations involving broader economic challenges.

With this, any wage adjustments moving forward will continue to be decided on a regional basis, unless a national policy is enacted by Congress.
