GOV’T TRACKS SOURCES OF FAKE NEWS ON ENERGY, COVID LOCKDOWN

Malacañang warned on Sunday that those behind the spread of false reports about an alleged “energy lockdown” starting April 20 and a supposed “COVID-19 Cicada variant emergency lockdown” will face accountability under the law.

Communications Secretary Dave Gomez said the Department of Justice is already tracing the origin of the misleading claims to ensure those responsible are punished.

“There will be no zero tolerance for those who maliciously and deliberately commit these acts to advance their personal or political vested interest,” Gomez declared.

He emphasized that the government will impose the heaviest penalties available against individuals who deliberately spread fake news intended to confuse the public, weaken trust in government, disrupt the economy, and endanger Filipinos during emergencies.

Gomez reminded that under the Revised Penal Code, spreading false information on social media carries up to six months of imprisonment, while penalties are doubled under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

The Palace stressed that any attempt to mislead the public on matters of energy security, supply, or pricing will be treated as a serious crime.

Gomez also urged Filipinos to think carefully before sharing unverified information online, warning that careless posts could cause alarm and harm.

Malacañang called on the public to reject disinformation and unite in pursuit of truth and national stability.
