U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran, just two hours before the deadline he had set for Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face possible destruction of its infrastructure.
Earlier, Trump warned that “whole civilization will die tonight” unless Iran complied with the ultimatum.
In a Truth Social post on Wednesday morning (Philippine time), Trump said he would temporarily suspend bombing and other military attacks against Iran for two weeks.
He explained that the decision was based on talks with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, who urged restraint, along with Iran’s reported commitment to fully, immediately, and safely reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” Trump declared.
He added that Iran had presented a 10-point proposal serving as a “workable basis” for negotiations, with expectations of reaching a peace agreement within the two-week truce.
