ALEX EALA FALLS TO OSTAPENKO IN LINZ OPEN SECOND ROUND EXIT

Filipina tennis standout Alex Eala bowed out of the WTA 500 Linz Open in Austria after a hard-fought 4-6, 5-7 loss to Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the second round on Wednesday night.

The match marked Eala’s first clay-court tournament of the season and her first defeat to Ostapenko in three career meetings. The fourth-seeded Latvian rallied impressively in the second set, overturning a 1-5 deficit to secure the win in one hour and 43 minutes.

Ranked World No. 46, Eala entered the second round with momentum after a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Austria’s Julia Grabher in the opening round.

Prior to this match, Eala had dominated their head-to-head encounters in 2025, defeating Ostapenko twice — first at the Miami Open (Round of 64) with a 6-7(2), 5-7 win, and again at the Eastbourne Open (Round of 16), where she led 6-0, 2-6, 2-3 before Ostapenko retired.

With the victory, Ostapenko advances to the Round of 16, where she will face Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse, who defeated Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, last year’s runner-up, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Other second-round matchups feature top seed Mirra Andreeva against American Sloane Stephens, second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova versus Czech Karolina Pliskova, and third seed Liudmila Samsonova taking on Austria’s Lilli Tagger.

Fifth seed Sorana Cirstea is set to face Hungary’s Dalma Galfi, while Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch awaits the winner between Austria’s Anastasia Potapova and China’s Shuai Zhang. Croatia’s Donna Vekic will face the victor of the match between Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina and Hungary’s Panna Udvardy.

Despite the early exit, Eala showed strong form and competitiveness as she continues her campaign on the WTA Tour.
