Former Ako Bicol Party-list Representative Zaldy Co is currently in the custody of Czech authorities after a failed attempt to cross into Germany, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed on Friday.
According to the President, Co—who is subject to an international manhunt—was intercepted at the German border after traveling from the Czech Republic. German authorities reportedly refused him entry and subsequently returned him to Czech jurisdiction.
“He (Co) was denied entry and returned to Czech authorities, where he remains in custody,” Marcos said in a social media post. “Our coordination with Czech authorities continues.”
Repatriation and Legal Coordination
The Philippine government said efforts are now underway to resolve legal and diplomatic requirements for Co’s return to the country.
President Marcos stressed that authorities are closely coordinating with foreign counterparts to ensure proper procedures are observed.
Officials aim to bring Co back to the Philippines “at the soonest possible time,” pending completion of extradition or deportation processes.
Co previously served as chairperson of the House Committee on Appropriations, a powerful position overseeing the national budget. His tenure later became controversial amid allegations linked to anomalous flood control projects.
Prior to his detention in Europe, intelligence reports indicated that Co may have been attempting to seek refuge in Portugal. Philippine authorities had already cancelled his passport, though reports suggest he may hold a Portuguese passport obtained years earlier, potentially allowing movement within parts of the European Union.
Malacañang said it will release further updates as developments in the legal process unfold.
