GOV’T PRESSES META FOR SWIFTER ACTION VS FAKE NEWS, DISINFORMATION

The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced on Monday, April 20, that it will meet with Meta to demand stronger action against the persistent spread of fake news and disinformation in the Philippines.

The move follows a joint request from the DICT, Department of Justice (DOJ), and Malacañang, urging Meta—owner of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp—to address harmful content more aggressively.

While Meta has responded to the government’s inquiry, the DICT expressed dissatisfaction, saying the company’s measures lack urgency.

“We acknowledge Meta’s response… However, the interventions highlighted in their reply fall short of directly addressing the urgency of the situation and the specific, time-bound actions we have requested,” the DICT stated.

Under its “Kontra Fake News” initiative, the DICT stressed that disinformation is now a threat to national stability, not just an online nuisance.

  • Right to Accurate Information: Upholding public access to truth.
  • Accountability: Holding purveyors of disinformation responsible.
  • Public Order & Security: Preventing panic and economic instability.

The DICT clarified that freedom of expression must not be weaponized to spread falsehoods.

“This freedom does not extend to the deliberate spread of false information that can cause public panic, undermine trust in institutions, or threaten public order,” the agency emphasized.

The upcoming meeting is seen as critical for Meta’s operations in the Philippines. The DICT warned that if discussions fail to yield “meaningful improvements,” the government is prepared to impose stricter regulatory frameworks and enforcement measures.

The agency concluded with a vow to ensure a safer digital environment under the banner of “Digital Bayanihan” toward a “Bagong Pilipinas.”
