ROBREDO REJECTS 2028 NATIONAL RUN, EYES SECOND TERM AS NAGA MAYOR

Former Vice President and current Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo has officially shut the door on a potential return to national politics in the 2028 elections, despite her strong showing in recent pre-election surveys.

In a recent local radio interview, Robredo expressed her firm commitment to her current role, emphasizing that her priorities remain local.

“Sigurado na ako sa sarili ko na hindi na ko ma-national,” she stated, putting to rest speculations about another presidential bid.

Focus on Local “Finish Lines”

Since assuming the mayoralty following her victory in the 2025 local elections, Robredo has been vocal about the steep learning curve and the vast work required to transform Naga.

She recently institutionalized the “2028 Finish Lines,” a strategic development framework aimed at making the city climate-resilient and economically inclusive.

Robredo admitted that while progress is visible, the complexity of local governance requires more time than a single three-year term allows.

“Sa tingin ko considerably, ma-a-achieve naman natin ’yong mga sinet na… pero beyond that marami pang gagawin,” Robredo explained in Bicolano.

Navigating Bureaucracy

The Mayor also opened up about the personal frustrations of governance, citing the limitations of time and the slow pace of administrative processes.

”Ako sa tingin ko, ang three years maiksi. Maiksi siya para gawin ang lahat. In fact, very frustrating para sa akin… na marami ang gusto kong gawin na hindi ko mamadali dahil kailangan kong i-navigate ang bureaucracy. Dahil marami rin ang hindi ko control,” she said.

Robredo confirmed that she is leaning toward continuing her work in Naga beyond 2028, effectively choosing local service over the national spotlight.

”Ako most probably, magsi-seek pa ako ng second term [as Naga City mayor],” she added.

The 2028 Political Landscape

Robredo’s announcement comes at a pivotal time in Philippine politics. Having finished second in the 2022 presidential race to Ferdinand Marcos Jr., she continues to be viewed by many as the primary figurehead of the opposition.

Analysts have frequently positioned her as the most viable challenger to Vice President Sara Duterte, who has already signaled her intent to run for the presidency in 2028.
